What are the characteristics of a thriller film?

Thriller films will normally have a set of un-written rules in order to catch and maintain the audience’s attention.

Thrillers use a series of different conventions and characteristics, the main one being the uses of tension or suspense. Thrillers often include a few cliff hangers within the story and they typically make the audience think whilst sitting on the edge of their seats. The thriller genre is a category of fiction concerned with stories of excitement, suspense. Thriller films usually overlap into other sub-genres such as crime, sci -fi and adventure.

Characteristics of the thriller genre often include a protagonist or small group of heroes opposed by a vastly superior enemy/ antagonist. The threat of death or capture is ever-present, and clever plot twists usually complicate the matter.

The location of a thriller is typically in a dark creepy area where there is a sense of negative atmosphere and the audience know that something bad is going to happen, but they just don't know what. The music in the background is usually loud and fast if there is a climax approaching to connote danger and anticipation for the audience to feel nervous and excited at the same time.

The characters usually wear dark clothing to make the scene seem more spooky and scary which help the film fall into the thriller genre. Also, the main characters in a thriller are stereotypically male as they are usually dominant and have more power.
